==Death== [[File:Tomb of Elizabeth I and Mary I.jpg|thumb|alt=Tomb of Elizabeth I and Mary I|Tomb of Elizabeth I and Mary I in [[Westminster Abbey]]]] After Philip's visit in 1557, Mary again thought she was pregnant, with a baby due in March 1558.<ref>Porter, p. 398; Waller, pp. 106, 112; Whitelock, p. 299.</ref> She decreed in her will that her husband would be the regent during their child's minority.<ref>Whitelock, pp. 299β300.</ref> But no child was born, and Mary was forced to accept that Elizabeth would be her lawful successor.<ref>Whitelock, p. 301.</ref> Mary was weak and ill from May 1558.<ref>Loades, p. 305; Whitelock, p. 300.</ref> In pain, possibly from [[ovarian cyst]]s or [[uterine cancer]],<ref>Waller, p. 108.</ref> she died on 17 November 1558, aged 42, at [[St James's Palace]], during an [[influenza]] epidemic that also claimed Archbishop Pole's life later that day. She was succeeded by Elizabeth.
