McGwire played for the [[United States national baseball team|United States national team]] during his collegiate years. That squad, which included future Hall-of-Famer [[Barry Larkin]], emerged as the favorite for the competition, after [[Cuba national baseball team|Cuba]] joined the Soviet Union-led [[1984 Summer Olympics boycott|boycott]] of the games. The U.S. team won the [[silver medal]] in the tournament, with Japan finishing ahead for the gold medal.
