Maltese has both [[Semitic languages|Semitic]] vocabulary and words derived from [[Romance languages]], primarily [[Italian language|Italian]]. Words such as {{lang|mt|tweġiba}} (Arabic origin) and {{lang|mt|risposta}} (Italian origin) have the same meaning ("answer") but are both used in Maltese, rather like "answer" and "response" in English.
