Since Lithuania declared the restoration of its independence on 11 March 1990, it has maintained strong democratic traditions. The Lithuanian [[head of state]] is the president, directly elected for a five-year term and serving a maximum of two terms. The judges of the [[Constitutional Court of Lithuania|Constitutional Court]] (''Konstitucinis Teismas'') serve nine-year terms. The court is renewed by a third every three years. The judges are appointed by the Seimas, on the nomination by the President, Chairman of the Seimas, and the Chairman of the Supreme Court. The [[unicameral]] Lithuanian parliament, the [[Seimas]], has 141 members elected to four-year terms - 71 in single-member constituencies, and the others in a nationwide vote by [[proportional representation]].
