In the early 20th century, the trustees acquired the Homewood estate of Charles Carroll, son of [[Charles Carroll of Carrollton|Charles Carroll of Carollton]], a signer of the [[United States Declaration of Independence|Declaration of Independence]]. Carroll's [[Homewood House]] is considered one of the finest examples of [[Federal architecture]], which most of the university's buildings are modeled after.
