===Mental Illness(es)=== Some patients arrive at an emergency department for a complaint of mental illness. In many jurisdictions (including many U.S. states), patients who appear to be mentally ill and to present a danger to themselves or others may be brought against their will to an emergency department by law enforcement officers for psychiatric examination. The emergency department conducts medical clearance rather than treats acute behavioral disorders. From the emergency department, patients with significant mental illness will be transferred to a psychiatric unit (in many cases involuntarily). In recent years, [[EmPATH unit]]s have been developed to relieve pressure on hospital emergency departments and improve the treatment of psychiatric emergencies. Emergency departments are often the first point of contact with healthcare for people who [[self-harm]]. As such they are crucial in supporting them and can play a role in preventing suicide.<ref>{{cite journal |vauthors=Robinson J, Bailey E |date=March 2022 |title=Experiences of care for self-harm in the emergency department: the perspectives of patients, carers and practitioners |journal=BJPsych Open |volume=8 |issue=2 |pages=e66 |doi=10.1192/bjo.2022.35 |pmc=8935906 |pmid=35264275}}</ref> At the same time, according to a study conducted in England, people who self-harm often experience that they do not receive meaningful care at the emergency department.<ref>{{cite journal |display-authors=6 |vauthors=Saygin D, Tabib T, Bittar HE, Valenzi E, Sembrat J, Chan SY, Rojas M, Lafyatis R |date=2022-03-07 |title=Transcriptional profiling of lung cell populations in idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension |journal=Pulmonary Circulation |type=Plain English summary |publisher=National Institute for Health and Care Research |volume=10 |issue=1 |doi=10.3310/alert_49221 |pmid=32166015|pmc=7052475 }}</ref><ref>{{cite journal | doi=10.1192/bjo.2021.1006 | title=Experiences of care for self-harm in the emergency department: Comparison of the perspectives of patients, carers and practitioners | date=2021 | last1=O'Keeffe | first1=Sally | last2=Suzuki | first2=Mimi | last3=Ryan | first3=Mary | last4=Hunter | first4=Jennifer | last5=McCabe | first5=Rose | journal=BJPsych Open | volume=7 | issue=5 | pmc=8485342 }}</ref> Higher ambient temperature may also increase mental illness related emergency department presentations, particularly in females.<ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Ooi |first1=Wen Yu Claire |last2=Braund |first2=Taylor A |last3=Elhindi |first3=James |last4=Harris |first4=Anthony WF |date=2024-04-15 |title=Ambient maximum daily temperature and mental health-related presentations to a western Sydney emergency department, 2015β2019: analysis of hospital and meteorological data |journal=Medical Journal of Australia |language=en |volume=220 |issue=7 |pages=379β380 |doi=10.5694/mja2.52267 |pmid=38571389 |issn=0025-729X|doi-access=free }}</ref><ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Thompson |first1=Rhiannon |last2=Lawrance |first2=Emma L |last3=Roberts |first3=Lily F |last4=Grailey |first4=Kate |last5=Ashrafian |first5=Hutan |last6=Maheswaran |first6=Hendramoorthy |last7=Toledano |first7=Mireille B |last8=Darzi |first8=Ara |date=July 2023 |title=Ambient temperature and mental health: a systematic review and meta-analysis |journal=The Lancet Planetary Health |volume=7 |issue=7 |pages=e580βe589 |doi=10.1016/s2542-5196(23)00104-3 |pmid=37437999 |issn=2542-5196|doi-access=free |hdl=10044/1/104479 |hdl-access=free }}</ref>
