== Later life == Throughout his long life, Sabine received numerous decorations for his contributions to science. In 1849, the Royal Society awarded him one of its gold medals for his work on terrestrial magnetism. Sabine was president of the society from November 1861 until his resignation in November 1871.{{sfnm|''Proc. R. Soc.''|1861|1p=469|''Proc. R. Soc.''|1871|2p=57}} He was a member of the Royal Commission of 1868–1869, for standardizing [[History of Weights and Measures|weights and measures]]. Both Oxford and Cambridge bestowed honorary doctorates on him. He was a fellow of the [[Linnean Society of London|Linnean Society]] and the [[Royal Astronomical Society]] and president of the [[British Association for the Advancement of Science]].<ref name="obit_mnras"/><ref name="obit_obs"/> In 1867, he was elected a foreign member of the [[Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences]] and a Foreign Honorary Member of the [[American Academy of Arts and Sciences]].<ref name=AAAS>{{cite web|title=Book of Members, 1780–2010: Chapter S|url=http://www.amacad.org/publications/BookofMembers/ChapterS.pdf|publisher=[[American Academy of Arts and Sciences]]|access-date=13 September 2016}}</ref> He became a [[Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath]] in 1869.<ref name="DCB"/> He retired from the army on full pay in 1877, having been promoted full general on 7 February 1870.<ref>{{London Gazette|city=e|issue=8037|page=241|date=1 March 1870}}</ref> He had been a member of the [[American Philosophical Society]] since 1841.<ref>{{Cite web|title=APS Member History|url=https://search.amphilsoc.org/memhist/search?creator=&title=&subject=&subdiv=&mem=&year=1841&year-max=1841&dead=&keyword=&smode=advanced|access-date=2021-04-09|website=search.amphilsoc.org}}</ref> He married [[Elizabeth Juliana Leeves Sabine|Elizabeth Juliana Leeves]] (1807-79) in 1826. She was an accomplished woman in her own right, she had assisted her husband in his scientific endeavours for more than half a century. Her four-volume translation of Alexander von Humboldt's monumental textbook of geophysics ''[[Kosmos (Humboldt)|Kosmos]]'', was published from 1849 to 1858.Her husband, Sabine wrote an introduction and added notes to this.<ref name=":0" /> They translated ''Humboldt's Aspects of nature (1850)'', ''Meteorological essays'' by [[François Arago|Francois Arago]]. She was also responsible for the English translation of [[Ferdinand von Wrangel|Ferdinand von Wrangel's]] ''Narrative of an Expedition to the Polar Sea'', working from a German translation by [[Georg von Engelhardt]].<ref>[https://archive.org/stream/narrativeofexped00wran#page/n3/mode/2up ''Narrative of an Expedition to the Polar Sea''], Ferdinand von Wrangell, London (1840).</ref> Sabine authored numerous books, wrote hundreds of [[scientific papers]] (103 of which are cataloged in the Royal Society's collection), and contributed articles and literature reviews on topics related to [[Terrestrial Physics|terrestrial physics.]]<ref name=":0" /> Sir Edward Sabine died aged 94 in his home in Richmond, Surrey<ref name=":0" /> on 26 June 1883, and was buried in the family vault at [[Tewin]], Hertfordshire.<ref name="Waterston" /> His wife is also buried there.<ref name=":0" /> A portrait of Sabine can be found at the Royal Society, while another, painted by [[George Frederic Watts|G. F. Watts]], RA, in 1876, hangs in the Royal Artillery mess in Woolwich. Additionally, there is an oil painting of him by [[Stephen Pearce]] (1850) in the [[National Portrait Gallery, London|National Portrait Gallery in London.]]
