During campaign appearances, Quayle criticized fellow candidate [[George W. Bush]]. Quayle finished eighth in the August 1999 [[Iowa Straw Poll (1979–2011)|Ames Straw Poll]]. He withdrew from the race the next month and supported Bush.<ref name="broder"/>
