In January 1930, Coughlin began attacking [[socialism]] and [[Ideology of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union|Soviet Communism]], both ideologies strongly opposed by the Catholic Church. In 1933, Coughlin criticized Roosevelt's decision to extend [[diplomatic recognition]] by the United States of the [[Soviet Union]].{{r|SlateCoughlin}}

Coughlin criticized American capitalists, stating that their greed was making [[Communism|communist]] ideologies attractive to workers. He warned, "Let not the workingman be able to say that he is driven into the ranks of socialism by the inordinate and grasping greed of the manufacturer."{{sfn|Brinkley|1983|p=95}}
