The population density was {{convert|2867.5|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 34,571 housing units at an average density of {{convert|1357.9|/sqmi|/km2|1}}. The racial makeup of the city was 69.1% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 24.2% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.5% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.3% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 1.0% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 4.8% from two or more races. The racial makeup of the city was 74.5% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 21.0% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.5% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.3% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], nil% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.6% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 3.1% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] people of any race were 1.2% of the population.
