Burien is served by the [[Highline School District]]. High schools in Burien include [[Highline High School]], Big Picture, CHOICE Academy, and the Puget Sound Skills Center. In 1997 the city was subject to international media attention when Shorewood Elementary School teacher [[Mary Kay Letourneau]] raped one of her sixth grade students and became pregnant with his child.
