For years, despite being a major economic center for retail in Fairfield County, Brookfield had lacked a walkable downtown area. Most of the large economic activity was centered on the southern portion of Federal Road near [[Danbury, Connecticut|Danbury]].<ref>[https://www.newstimes.com/business/article/Brookfield-Federal-Road-developments-aim-to-keep-12997754.php "Brookfield: Federal Road developments aim to keep traffic moving north"].
