Old roads were renovated and new highways were also built. [[Massawa International Airport]] is an alternative airport nearby. As of 1999, there is a total of 317 kilometres of {{Track gauge|950 mm}} (narrow gauge) rail line in Eritrea. As of 2009, the section from Asmara to [[Massawa]] was fully rebuilt and available for service.
