There are an estimated 50 to 60 million olive trees in Apulia, and the region accounts for 40% of Italy's olive oil production. Since 2008–2010, the olive oil industry in Apulia has been under threat from the pathogen ''[[Xylella fastidiosa]]'', a disease that inhibits the trees' uptake of water and nutrients. The epicentre of the epidemic is the southeastern part of the region.
