Burnside died suddenly of "neuralgia of the heart" ([[angina pectoris]]) on the morning of September 13, 1881, at his home in Bristol, Rhode Island, accompanied only by his doctor and family servants.<ref name="GlobeObit">{{cite news |title=General Burnside Dead |url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/107446534/ambrose-burnside-obituary-boston-globe/ |access-date=12 August 2022 |work=The Boston Globe |date=14 September 1881 | page=1}}</ref>
