Though replacements were found, five men's teams including the defending Olympic Champion United States withdrew from the competition in addition to the US Women's team. * In the women's competition, the host Soviet Union won the competition beating Bulgaria for gold, Yugoslavia won bronze. * The men's competition featured only the second instance of the US Men's Basketball team not winning gold with the first one being in [[1972 Summer Olympics|Munich]]. Yugoslavia took home the gold beating Italy in the final. The hosts, Soviet Union, winners in 1972, won the bronze.
