A major drought which began in 1450 continued to affect the [[Aztec Empire]]. Although famine conditions had already began to set in, they worsened in 1453, and people resorted to [[famine food]]s such as the roots of wild plants, [[corn silk]], and [[agave]]. Some sold themselves into slavery in exchange for maize. Many died from starvation, especially due to early frosts in the autumn of 1453.
