After the establishment of the [[Ausgleich|Dual-Monarchy]] in 1867, there followed what is often called the "golden age" of city development of Subotica. Many schools were opened after 1867 and in 1869 the railway connected the city to the world. In 1896 an electrical power plant was built, further enhancing the development of the city and the whole region. Subotica now adorned itself with its remarkable Central European, [[fin de siècle]] architecture. In 1902 a Jewish synagogue was built in the Art Nouveau style.
