The racial makeup of the city was 80.94% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 3.50% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.53% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.62% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.00% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 5.81% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 8.60% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 13.58% of the population. There were 5,762 households, out of which 24.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.74% were married couples living together, 12.55% had a female householder with no husband present, and 48.82% were non-families. 43.21% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.09% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 2.10. The city's age distribution consisted of 20.0% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40.4 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.9 males. The median income for a household in the city was $40,778, and the median income for a family was $59,266. Males had a median income of $44,976 versus $21,567 for females. About 17.9% of families and 21.5% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 40.0% of those under age 18 and 4.6% of those age 65 or over. Streator is a principal city of the [[Ottawa, Illinois|Ottawa]] [[Ottawa, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area|Micropolitan Statistical Area]], which was the [[Table of United States Micropolitan Statistical Areas|tenth-most populous]] Micropolitan Statistical Area in the United States as of 2009.
