===Later reported sightings===
Sea cow sightings have been reported after Brandt's official 1768 date of extinction. [[Lucien M. Turner|Lucien Turner]], an American [[ethnologist]] and naturalist, said the natives of [[Attu Island]] reported that the sea cows survived into the 1800s, and were sometimes hunted.<ref name=domning2007/>

In 1963, the official journal of the [[Academy of Sciences of the USSR]] published an article announcing a possible sighting. The previous year, the [[whaling ship]] ''Buran'' had reported a group of large marine mammals grazing on seaweed in shallow water off [[Kamchatka]],<ref>{{cite book |last=Silverberg |first=R. |year=1973 |title=The Dodo, the Auk and the Oryx |publisher=[[Puffin Books]] |location=London, United Kingdom |isbn=978-0-14-030619-4 |oclc=473809649 |page=83}}</ref> in the [[Gulf of Anadyr]]. The crew reported seeing six of these animals ranging from {{convert|6|to|8|m|ft|sp=us}}, with trunks and split lips.
