==Modern times== The [[bishop of St Albans]] is [[Alan Smith (bishop)|Alan Smith]], installed in September 2009. Jonathan Smith is [[Archdeacon of St Albans]], installed in October 2008. On 4 December 2021, [[Jo Kelly-Moore]] became the tenth [[Dean of St Albans|dean of the cathedral]].<ref name="jkm">{{Cite web|url=https://www.stalbanscathedral.org/news/the-very-reverend-jo-kelly-moore-installed-as-dean-of-st-albans|title=Jo Kelly-Moore installed as Dean of St Albans|date=4 December 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211213215050/https://www.stalbanscathedral.org/news/the-very-reverend-jo-kelly-moore-installed-as-dean-of-st-albans|archive-date=13 December 2021|website=St Albans Cathedral}}</ref> [[Robert Runcie]], later [[Archbishop of Canterbury]], was Bishop of St Albans from 1970 to 1980 and returned to live in the city after his retirement; he is commemorated by a [[gargoyle]] on the cathedral as well as being buried in the graveyard. [[Colin Slee]], former dean of [[Southwark Cathedral]], was sub-dean at St Albans under Runcie and the then dean, Peter Moore. The bishop's residence, Abbey Gate House, is in Abbey Mill Lane, St Albans, as is the house of the [[bishop of Hertford]]. [[Eric James (priest)|Eric James]], Chaplain Extraordinary to the Queen, was canon at St Albans for many years.
