Within Longyearbyen, Barentsburg and Ny-Ålesund, there are road systems, but they do not connect with each other. [[Off-road]] motorized transport is prohibited on bare ground, but [[snowmobile]]s are used extensively during winter—both for commercial and recreational activities. Transport from Longyearbyen to Barentsburg ({{cvt|45|km|disp=or}}) and Pyramiden ({{cvt|100|km|disp=or}}) is possible by snowmobile during winter, or by ship all year round. All settlements have ports, and Longyearbyen has a bus system.<ref>Umbriet (1997): 63–67</ref>

[[Svalbard Airport, Longyear]], located {{cvt|3|km|0}} from Longyearbyen, is the only airport offering air transport for the island.
