Gullit's knee injuries also hampered his playing time at the [[1990 FIFA World Cup]], but his dribble and shot against the Republic of Ireland helped the Netherlands qualify for the second round. The Netherlands faced West Germany in a match marred by an altercation between Frank Rijkaard and [[Rudi Völler]]. In 1993, Gullit and Netherlands manager [[Dick Advocaat]] began what was to be a long-running dispute which ultimately ended Gullit's international career.
