The racial makeup of the city was 32.90% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 13.20% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.60% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 1.90% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.06% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 27.60% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]] and 6.17% from two or more races. There were 44,710 households, out of which 40.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.4% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 26.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.4% were non-families. 20.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.25 and the average family size was 3.71.<ref name=Census2000/><ref name=Census2000SF1/>

In the city, the population was spread out, with 29.8% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 32.0% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.1 males.<ref name=Census2000/><ref name=Census2000SF1/>
The median income for a household in the city was $30,127, and the median income for a family was $32,983. Males had a median income of $27,911 versus $21,733 for females.
