Marble Hill was part of the northern tip of Manhattan Island, but the [[Harlem River Ship Canal]], dug in 1895 to better connect the [[Harlem River|Harlem]] and [[Hudson River|Hudson]] rivers, separated it from the remainder of Manhattan.<ref name="canal">[[Christopher Gray (architectural historian)|Gray, Christopher]].
