The [[population density]] was {{convert|11|/mi2|/km2|}}. There were 11,010 housing units at an average density of {{convert|11|/mi2|/km2|}}>). Racially, 76.5% of the population were [[White American|White]], 17.3% [[Native Americans in the United States|Native American]], 0.5% [[African American|Black or African American]], 0.2% [[Asian American|Asian]], 0.2% of some other race and 5.3% [[Multiracial American|of two or more races]]; 1.1% were [[Hispanic and Latino Americans|Hispanic or Latino]] (of any race). In 2010, there were 5,024 households, of which 20.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 8.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.9% were non-families. 31.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.7. Among them, 18.7% of the population were under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 19.3% from 25 to 44, 34.0% from 45 to 64, and 22.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 49 years. The population was 50.5% male and 49.5% female.

The [[median household income]] was $39,055 and the median family income was $50,984. The [[per capita income]] was $22,195. About 10.5% of families and 14.1% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 19.3% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.

Religiously, [[Christianity in the United States|Christianity]] is the predominant religion for the county and region of the Upper Peninsula.
