Lao She advocated the use of [[Written vernacular Chinese|Baihua]] or plain language in written Chinese. Baihua evolved a new language from classic Chinese during the [[May Fourth Movement]]. As the All-China League of Resistance Writers leader, he found he needed to abandon the use of classical Chinese for a more accessible modern style. Lao She was an early user of Baihua, and other writers and artists also adopted Baihua.
