James was hospitalized in January 2010 to treat an infection caused by [[Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus|MRSA]], a bacterium resistant to many antibiotics. During her hospitalization, her son Donto revealed to the public that, in 2008, she had been diagnosed with [[Alzheimer's disease]].<ref name="cnn.com"/>

In 2011, James was diagnosed with [[leukemia]]. Her funeral was presided over by the [[Al Sharpton|Reverend Al Sharpton]] and took place at Greater Bethany Community Church in [[Gardena, California]], eight days after her death.
