Whereas nineteen months earlier he led Derby County to the league title and eight months earlier Clough was managing a team playing Juventus in the European Cup, he was now managing a club who, just after his appointment as manager, lost to non-league [[Walton & Hersham F.C.|Walton & Hersham]] 4β0 at home in an FA Cup replay. On 1 December 1973, his side lost 8β2 at home to [[Bristol Rovers F.C.|Bristol Rovers]]. Brighton eventually finished in 19th place that [[1973β74 Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. season|1973β74 season]].
