There were 111,927 housing units at an average density of {{convert|746.6|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the city was 62.46% [[African American|Black]], 35.07% [[White American|White]], 0.17% [[Indigenous peoples of the Americas|Native American]], 0.80% [[Asian American|Asian]], 0.04% [[Pacific Islander]], 0.62% from [[Race (United States census)|other races]], and 0.83% from [[Multiracial American|two or more races]]. 1.55% of the population were [[Hispanic or Latino American|Hispanic or Latino]] of any race.

There were 98,782 households, out of which 27.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 31.1% were married couples living together, 24.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% were non-families. 34.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.4% had someone living alone who was 65&nbsp;years of age or older.
