Abd al-Rahman was the son of [[Mu'awiya ibn Hisham|Mu'awiya]], son of [[Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik|Hisham]], son of [[Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan|Abd al-Malik]], according to Abd el-Wahid Merrakechi when reciting his ancestry.<ref>Fagnan, E.
