The National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS) is located in [[Southampton Docks]] three miles south of the main university campus. Planning of the campus began in 1989 and was completed in 1994 due to cuts and uncertainties whether a national research centre could be successfully integrated with a university.<ref>{{Harvnb|Nash|Sherwood|2002|pp=235–247}}235–247</ref> It was opened in 1996 by [[Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh]].
