Spielberg's first film as an executive producer was the directorial debut of [[Robert Zemeckis]], [[I Wanna Hold Your Hand (film)|''I Wanna Hold Your Hand'']] (1978).<ref name="Thomson"/> He produced Zemeckis's [[dark comedy]] ''[[Used Cars]]'' (1980), which was a critical but not a commercial success.
