The first dichotomy in the [[phylogeny]] of extant Manidae separates Asian pangolins (''Manis'') from African pangolins (''Smutsia'' and ''Phataginus'').<ref name="Du Toit2014"/> Within the former, ''Manis pentadactyla'' is the [[sister group]] to a clade comprising ''M. crassicaudata'' and ''M. javanica''.
