*On 21 May 2012, a steam locomotive pushing carriages was accidentally started in the wrong direction at Grosmont and killed a volunteer guard, Bob Lund, who was uncoupling carriages.<ref name="BBC-21279819">{{cite news |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-york-north-yorkshire-21279819 |title=North Yorkshire Moors Railway death: Family to sue |work=BBC News Online |access-date=25 November 2019 |date=31 January 2013}}</ref>
*On 21 September 2021, [[British Rail Class 20|Class 20]] [[diesel locomotive]] 20189 collided with a rake of carriages at Grosmont. Five passengers were injured. A [[Rail Accident Investigation Branch]] investigation revealed that the NYMR could not prove that the traction inspector in charge of the locomotive at the time of the accident was qualified to drive that class of locomotive.
