During ''anaphase A'', the [[cohesin]]s that bind sister chromatids together are cleaved, forming two identical daughter chromosomes.<ref name="FitzHarris-2012"/> Shortening of the kinetochore microtubules pulls the newly formed daughter chromosomes to opposite ends of the cell.
