According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the city has a total area of {{convert|8.6|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|8.1|sqmi|km2}}  is land and {{convert|0.5|sqmi|km2}}  (5.79%) is water.

A park called the [[Middlesex Fells Reservation]], to the north, lies partly within the city. This {{convert|2060|acre|km2|0|adj=on}} preserve is shared by Medford with the municipalities of [[Winchester, Massachusetts|Winchester]], [[Stoneham, Massachusetts|Stoneham]], [[Melrose, Massachusetts|Melrose]], and [[Malden, Massachusetts|Malden]]. The [[Mystic River]] flows roughly west to southeast through the middle of the city.
