With Nielsen's American citizenship, he maintained his Canadian heritage: "There's no way you can be a Canadian and think you can lose it&nbsp;... Canadians are a goodly group. On February 20, 2002, Nielsen was named an honorary citizen of [[West Virginia]] and an Ambassador of Mountain State Goodwill.
