===David Chelliah accident=== Prior to the opening, on 16 August 2002 an accident occurred during a test run involving a {{convert|13.4|kg|lb|0|abbr=on}} safety wheel falling off a train and hitting the head of a pedestrian walking under the monorail viaduct at Jalan Sultan Ismail. The victim, David Chelliah, a journalist, suffered injuries that required hospitalisation. On 7 March 2003, Chelliah filed a MYR 5 million negligence suit against the companies involved in the design, installation and operation of the trains, as well as the Director-General of Railways.<ref>{{cite news |title=Long-drawn monorail case to be decided on 8 April |url=http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/index.php/malaysia/22096-long-drawn-monorail-case-to-be-decided-on-april-8 |access-date=30 July 2009 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090405161138/http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/index.php/malaysia/22096-long-drawn-monorail-case-to-be-decided-on-april-8 |archive-date=5 April 2009 }}</ref><ref>{{cite web|title=David Chelliah vs Monorail Malaysia Technology Sdn Bhd |url=http://www.ipsofactoj.com/appeal/2005/Part1/app2005(1)-010.htm |access-date=30 July 2009 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20060505095127/http://www.ipsofactoj.com/appeal/2005/Part1/app2005%281%29-010.htm |archive-date= 5 May 2006 }}</ref> On 8 April 2003, the High Court ruled that the Monorail company was liable for the incident, but not the Director-General of Railways. Although the monorail company reported that any such accident was "unlikely" as six bolts would have to be removed for it to occur and furthermore, a check of all 23 other safety wheels on the train involved did not turn up any other issues, the high court judgement ruled that the monorail company "failed to provide a reasonable explanation as to how the safety wheel had come off the train and instead relied on the possibility that there had been tampering by unknown persons".<ref>{{cite news |title=Bernama journalist to be awarded damages |url=http://www.thestar.com.my/story/?file=%2f2009%2f4%2f9%2fcourts%2f3658284&sec=courts |newspaper=The Star |location=Kuala Lumpur |date=9 March 2009 |access-date=2 September 2014 |archive-date=10 May 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170510141338/http://www.thestar.com.my/story/?file=%2f2009%2f4%2f9%2fcourts%2f3658284&sec=courts |url-status=dead }}</ref><ref>{{cite web |title=Chelliah finally wins it |url=http://www.malaysianbar.org.my/general_opinions/comments/chelliah_finally_wins_it.html |first=Reena |last=Raj |publisher=Malaysian Bar Council |access-date=2 September 2014 |archive-url=https://archive.today/20121220022513/http://www.malaysianbar.org.my/general_opinions/comments/chelliah_finally_wins_it.html |archive-date=20 December 2012 |url-status=dead }}</ref> As a result of this accident, the launch of the monorail was postponed.
