===Last years and death===
The [[Whitney Museum of American Art]] produced an exhibition of Lawrence's entire career in 1974, as did the [[Seattle Art Museum]] in 1986.<ref name=nytobit/>

Lawrence continued to paint until a few weeks before his death from [[lung cancer]] on June 9, 2000, at the age of 82.<ref name=nytobit/>
