All the Babenberg dukes from [[Leopold V, Duke of Austria|Leopold V]] onward were descended from [[Byzantine Empire|Byzantine emperors]] — [[Leopold V, Duke of Austria|Leopold]]'s mother, [[Theodora Komnene, Duchess of Austria|Theodora Komnene]], being a granddaughter of the [[Byzantine Emperor|Emperor]], [[John II Komnenos]]. Subsequently, [[Leopold V, Duke of Austria|Leopold V]]'s younger son, [[Leopold VI, Duke of Austria|Leopold VI]], also married a [[Byzantine Empire|Byzantine]] princess ([[Theodora Angelina (wife of Leopold VI of Austria)|Theodora Angelina]]), as did his youngest son (by [[Theodora Angelina (wife of Leopold VI of Austria)|Theodora]]), [[Frederick II, Duke of Austria|Frederick II]], who married ''Sophia Laskarina''.
