Unlike the rest of the [[List of French possessions and colonies#In Africa|French possessions in Africa]], [[French Algeria|Algeria]] was divided into departments just like Corsica or Normandy from 1848 until its independence in 1962. These departments were supposed to be "assimilated" or "integrated" to France sometime in the future.
