====Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant==== In 1972, the Duga-1 radio receiver, part of the larger [[Duga radar|Duga]] [[over-the-horizon radar]] array, began construction {{convert|11|km|mi|abbr=on}} west-northwest of Chernobyl. The plant was built alongside [[Pripyat]], an "[[atomograd]]" city founded on 4 February 1970 that was intended to serve the nuclear power plant. The decision to build the power plant was adopted by the [[Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union]] and the [[Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union]] on recommendations of the [[DerzhPlan|State Planning Committee]] that the Ukrainian SSR be its location.
