=== Colombo assassination === On June 28, 1971, Colombo was shot three times by Jerome A. Johnson, one being in the head, at the second Italian Unity Day rally in [[Columbus Circle]] sponsored by the [[Italian-American Civil Rights League]]; Johnson was immediately killed by Colombo's bodyguards.<ref name="colombo dies"/> Colombo was permanently [[paralysis|paralyzed]] from the shooting, and later died in 1978.<ref name="colombo dies">{{cite news|title=Joseph A.
