While English has always been the language used at the federal and state levels, no official language had been designated at the federal level before 2025, when English was made the [[official language]] of the United States by [[Executive Order 14224]].<ref name=":1" /> 

[[Puerto Rico]] is the only [[United States territory]] in which another language – Spanish – is the common language at home, in public, and in government.
