He was the subject of a documentary film by the [[National Film Board]], ''Reading Alistair MacLeod'', released in 2005. The 88-minute film, directed by [[William D. MacGillivray|Bill MacGillivray]], includes interviews with MacLeod, his wife Anita and other family members. Prominent writers such as [[Russell Banks]], [[Colm Tóibín]] and [[David Adams Richards]] read from and comment on MacLeod's writing. The film also features excerpts from composer Christopher Donison's opera ''Island'' based on one of MacLeod's short stories.<ref>Andrea Nemetz.
