Adams was an active member of [[United First Parish Church, Quincy, Massachusetts|First Parish Church]] in Quincy, which became [[Christian Unitarianism|Unitarian]] in doctrine by 1753.<ref name=":0">{{cite web |url=http://www.firstladies.org/biographies/firstladies.aspx?biography=2 |title=Abigail Adams Biography |publisher=National First Ladies' Library |website=Firstladies.org |access-date=September 7, 2016 |archive-date=May 31, 2019 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190531071833/http://firstladies.org/biographies/firstladies.aspx?biography=2 |url-status=dead }}</ref> Her theological views evolved over the course of her life. In a letter to her son near the end of her life, dated May 5, 1816, she wrote of her religious beliefs:
