Alphonso served as a judge and an ambassador, and was U.S. Secretary of War and Attorney General under President [[Ulysses S. He attended Woodward High School in Cincinnati. At Yale College, which he entered in 1874, the heavyset, jovial Taft was popular and an intramural heavyweight wrestling champion.
