== History == It was first mentioned around 1200 as Wele. The etymology is unknown.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://etymologiebank.nl/trefwoord/wehl |title=Wehl - (geografische naam) |website=Etymologiebank |access-date=21 March 2022 |language=nl}}</ref> The village developed between the [[Rhine]] and the [[Oude IJssel]]. In 1466, it became an independent parish. In 1647, it became an enclave of the [[Duchy of Cleves]] and no longer part of the [[Dutch Republic]].<ref name="monument">{{cite book|url=https://dbnl.org/tekst/sten009monu05_01/sten009monu05_01_0220.php |title=Wehl |author=Ronald Stenvert & Sabine Broekhoven |page=330 |year=2000 |publisher=Waanders |location=Zwolle |isbn=90-400-9406-3 |language=nl |access-date=21 March 2022}}</ref> The Catholic St. Martinus Church dates from 15th century, and has a tower from the 13th century with 12th century elements. Between 1894 and 1895, it was redesigned into its current form.<ref name="monument"/> In 1816, it became part of the Netherlands.<ref name="rep"/> In 1840, it was home to 408 people. After [[World War II]], Wehl started to expand rapidly.<ref name="plaats"/> In 1885, the [[Wehl railway station]] opened on the [[Winterswijk]]-[[Zevenaar]] railway line.
