==History== Watertown, before colonization, belonged to the Paugasuck Indians.<ref name=":0">{{Cite web |title=Watertown, CT |url=https://www.watertownct.org/community/about_watertown/brief_history.php |access-date=November 27, 2023 |website=www.watertownct.org |language=en}}</ref> In that time, the colony was called "Mattatock", though it had several variations in spelling through the years.<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://josfamilyhistory.com/locations/waterbury-ct.htm |title=Waterbury, Connecticut |website=JosFamilyHistory.com |access-date=August 15, 2017}}</ref> Colonization of the area today called Watertown began in 1684 when Thomas Judd and other proprietors bought the land as a group.<ref name=":0" /> The land where Watertown is now located, having originally belonged to Mattatock, officially changed its name to Watterbury (now Waterbury) by record on March 20, 1695, by consensus of a council. In 1729, the Garnsey family settled in an area of Watterbury, now called Guernseytown.<ref name=":0" /> The oldest house in Watertown today was built in 1735 on Main Street.<ref name=":0" /> A poet from the Revolutionary War, [[John Trumbull]], was born here in 1750.<ref name=":0" /> With a population of 338, the First Ecclesiastical Society of Westbury was formed.<ref name=":0" /> The Town of Watertown was officially established in 1780 when Westbury separated from Watterbury.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.watertownct.org/content/10339/6913/7102/default.aspx |title=Watertown, CT - Brief History of Watertown CT |website=www.WatertownCT.org |access-date=August 17, 2017}}</ref> Some years later, in 1893, [[Taft School|The Taft School]] was established in Watertown and has been there ever since.<ref name=":0" />
